__Pardners, you never cease to amaze me. In the spirit of our common interest, I have received some very interesting information from Pardner "Fixin Tubreak" of California.
__"Fixin Tubreak" is a displaced Texan who grew up in the immediate Scyene area, and so has a continuing simmering interest in our endeavor.
__To summarize, "Fixin Tubreak" uncovered a bit of ancient history concerning the first measurement of the Earth's circumference, in which Syene, Egypt, our name's origin, played a major role.
__In 247 B.C., Eratosthenes, a leading geographer and scientist of the day, was informed that there was a well in Syene, in which, on June 21, the longest day of the year, the Sun's rays shined directly to the bottom.
__Syene, happened to be in line with the Tropic of Capricorn, the line of the summer solstice.
__Eratosthenes was the librarian of Alexandria, the greatest library of the ancient world. He took measurements of a shadow in Alexandria on June 21, and the distance from Alexandria to Syene, and was able to calculate the circumference of the earth with amazing accuracy for his day. His conclusion was a circumference of 28,738 miles. Today, with our modern high-tech equipment, we come up with 24,902.

Way to go, "Fixin Tubreak"!
Thanks for sharing!

__Any of you other Pardners out there that are so inclined to dig and share, we'd all appreciate it !!

What's a
Scyene???

continues...

_The Scyene Post Office was located approximately 9 miles due east of Dallas, at the point at which the four corners of the tracts of land owned by Tom Johnson, Martin Pruitt, Job Badgley, and James B. Masters met, today the crossroads of Scyene and St. Augustine Roads. Today, this site is located just within the Dallas city limits, and just outside the city limits of Mesquite, Texas.
_The original settlers of what was to become Scyene were members of what was known as the Peter's Colony, created in 1841. W.S. Peters, for which it was named, was one of 20 investor/promoters headquartered in Louisville, Kentucky.

_Apparently, the bulk of the advertising for these newly available lands was centered along a line from Louisville, Kentucky to St. Louis, Missouri, because this is the general area where most of the settlers came from. Missouri, Southern Illinois, Kentucky, and Tennessee were well represented.

Once a 2-Story hotel owned by the Pruitt brothers at Scyene in its heyday, this was no more than a long, one-story building with its windows boarded up and its doors hanging loosely from their hinges when drawn in 1924 by Graphic Artist Fred Kamacker.

_All were unaware at the time that these facts of geography would place the future citizens of Scyene solidly with the Southern Cause in the upcoming Missouri-Kansas Border War and the War of Northern Aggression.
_All, of course, would have friends and maybe family left behind "back home" in Missouri and the bordering states. News of what was happening "back home" would inflame Scyene's citizenry in particular, and make heroes of all who would fight in the defense of their old homeland, family and friends. Thus, in action and sympathy, Scyene welcomed with open arms the Southern Guerillas, or so called "Bushwhackers". These facts would set the character of Scyene for the remainder of its existance.
